The Camel Derby Adventure and Cultural festival

The Camel Derby is a combination of adventure and Cultural travel infused with sports. Traversing through the unspoilt Northern country, through some of Kenya's most scenic terrain, you can expect to have a trully unique travel experience as you ride with us to Maralal, Samburu County. At Maralal, you have a chance to not only ride the Camel, an animal that is special to the pastoralist communities for many reasons, but also, COMPETE in a CAMEL RACE.  You get a handler for the camel who runs along you as you ride.

We stay at Maralal Lodge, sitting on its own animal sanctuary. Meaning we have plenty to see even without leaving the lodge
Join us and fill your travel journal with an extra ordinary travel experience.

DAY 1: Nairobi - Maralal through Nyeri and Nyahururu

We depart from Nairobi early in the morning through Nyeri and Nyahururu with a lunch stopover at Nyahururu. We then proceed on with our journey trans versing through Nyandarua, Laikipia and Samburu Counties, arriving in the early evening. Check in at the Maralal lodge our home for the next three days.

We go back later to do registration for the camel races at the Derby registration site before attending the governors official opening ceremony. We have dinner and

overnight at the lodge.

Day 2: Camel Races, Riding, Visit to the Kenyatta House, Cultural Exhibitions

Have an early breakfast and head out to the site of the Derby for the different activities of the day. The race covers a 10km stretch around the town, starting and ending in Kisima, which is slightly out of Maralal town. While a challenging affair, it is fun and a unique experience. Every camel comes with a handler who helps steer the camel and bring it to a stop or speed it up. While the competitor rides the camel the handler runs along. The cultural exhibitions also happen here.
After lunch we head to Kenyatta House that housed Kenya's first president while under house arrest. The day ends with a sundowner. After dinner we attend the awards ceremony and the closing party. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 3: Maralal - Nairobi through Gilgil and Naivasha

After breakfast we break camp and start our journey back to Nairobi through Nyahururu, Ol Kalou, Gilgil and Naivasha. We have lunch at Nyahuru arriving in Nairobi in the evening.
